Pastor's Column

October 27 pastor's column

We have a Holy Day of Obligation on Friday, the feast day of All Saints.    A vigil Mass for the holy day will be offered at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.  Masses on Friday will be at 6:15, 8:15, 12:30 and 6:30 p.m.  (The 8:15 Mass will be an all-school Mass.  We will have a crowded church for that one.)

Saturday, November 2, is All Souls’ Day.  We have our special Mass of remembrance at 8:15 on Saturday morning.  In a darkened church we will read the names of parishioners who have died in the last year and light a candle for each.  If you plan to attend the Mass and you have a loved one who died this year but didn’t have a St. Charles funeral, please call the parish office.  We will be sure that your loved one is added to our list.  The Mass will be livestreamed for those unable to attend.  Go to our parish website, stcharlesfortwayne.org, and you will see the link.

There will also be a Mass at noon on November 2 at Catholic Cemetery, remembering especially all those who are buried there.  We will gather at the outdoor altar in the old part of the cemetery.   A plenary indulgence is offered each day during the first week of November for those who offer prayer in a cemetery, receive Holy Communion without attachment to sin, offer prayers for the Pope, and have a sacramental confession within 20 days.  This is a chance to offer help to loved ones in purgatory.

For more information about indulgences, you might want to check a video made by Fr. Bobby.  It can be found at https://youtu.be/C6Ss9x4MjPo

The month of November is a special time to pray for those who have died.  Through the month we will have our memorial book with names of the dead in the front of church.  Please add any names as we keep these loved ones in prayer.  (We have used the same book for ten years or more; there is no need to repeat names which are already in the book.)

Another great opportunity this week:  Everyone is invited on Monday evening, October 28, as the pastor of Trinity English Lutheran Church will host us for a tour.  He will tell us about the building and the history of his congregation and also teach us a bit about the Lutheran faith.  It is a beautiful old downtown church and should be a very interesting evening.  Join us at Trinity English Lutheran at 7 p.m., or meet in the St. Charles parking lot at 6:30 and we’ll drive downtown in a carpool.
