Pastor's Column

June 16 pastor's column

I’m writing this column two weeks in advance, preparing for vacation, but I’ll be home by the time this goes to press.

I offer thanks and praise to Amy Johns, who has led our Religious Education program at St. Charles for the past 15 years.  Working with Lisa Schleinkofer and then Cindy Stults, Amy has coordinated our Monday evening classes, our summer Vacation Bible School, parent meetings, and liturgies for First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.  Amy will continue in her full-time job as assistant principal at Bishop Dwenger High School.  We thank Amy for her years of service.

At the same time, I am pleased to announce that Keith Heimann will fill Amy’s position.  Keith is a life-long parishioner who teaches religion in our parish school and who has been volunteering as a catechist in Religious Ed.  Like Amy, Keith is well qualified for the position, with both a teaching license and an administrative license.  He will work with Cindy Stults to continue these important programs.

Catholic Cemetery was founded on Lake Avenue in 1873.  lt has been the final resting place of the majority of our parishioners since our parish was founded.  In 2017, the Diocese opened a funeral home, named Divine Mercy, on the grounds of the Cemetery.  It quickly became popular with our parish families.  Now, the diocese is building a second funeral home, located at the intersection of Lima Road and Cedar Canyons Road in Huntertown.  The new Divine Mercy funeral home will look very much like the old.  There will be no cemetery at the Huntertown site, but there is plenty of land, and mausoleums and columbaria will be built for above-ground burials.  The new facility is expected to be ready for use in October.
