Pastor's Column

July 14 pastor's column

The national Eucharistic Congress will take place this week in Indianapolis from Thursday through Sunday.  Huge crowds are expected from across the country for this historic event.  Fr. Bobby and dozens of our parishioners will be attending, some for one-day sessions and some for the entire five days.  I have been told that EWTN will be broadcasting from Indianapolis.  For those of us who can’t attend, the broadcasts will provide an opportunity to take part from a distance.

With Fr. Bobby out of town on Thursday night, I will be leading the Bibles and Burgers event at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening.  Bring a lawn chair and a dish of food to share.  We will provide burgers and I’ll come up with some thoughts about the Bible.

A word from our church decorating people:  we have one parishioner who is in charge of watering the plants in the church.  It seems that well-meaning helpers have been adding water when they see a need.  The result is a lot of drowned plants.  If you note that a plant looks dry, please walk on by, trusting that the assigned person will soon take care of it.

We received a gracious thank you letter from the Pontifical Mission Society for the donations given through our parish envelopes.  They shared some stories of the good this society is doing:  in the Diocese of Natitingou, Benin (West Africa), two convents, two orphanages and two boarding schools are being constructed while 117 students are studying at a minor seminary, thanks to the donations of the pontifical society.  Thank you to those who contributed.

We had a seminarian, Thomas Bundy, with us at St. Charles for half of the summer.  Thomas graduated from Bishop Dwenger in 2023 and has finished one year of college seminary.   Thomas is no stranger to St. Charles.  His family belongs to Our Lady of Good Hope and while he was in high school he was active in our parish Y-Disciples youth ministry for four years.  As a first-year seminarian, he has a lot of other obligations this summer and he has already left us.  It was a joy having him here for his short assignment.  Meanwhile, our parish seminarians, Sam and Noah, will soon be back in town in time for the Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis.
